2021 BMW M340I

I am reporting a safety concern involving BMW vehicles equipped with the B58 Technical Update (B58TU) engine, commonly found in model years 2019–2021. These vehicles utilize a variable-displacement engine oil pump containing an internal thermoplastic adjusting component responsible for regulating oil pressure. Field failures are increasingly being reported in which this internal component fractures, resulting in sudden loss or instability of engine oil pressure. The failure frequently occurs…

The starter in my 2022 BMW M340I sedan was faulty after 54,000 miles. It began to take two attempts to start the vehicle each time and was at risk of not starting. The first attempt all electrical components would turn on but the ignition was unable to start the engine. Then the second attempt was generally successful. I took it to the dealer and had to replace my starter to return the vehicle to normal operation. BMW has recalled tens of thousands of other starters including my model but not…

Here’s a strong version that sounds frustrated but still credible and harder to dismiss: I’ve owned many vehicles over the years, and this BMW has been, without question, the most problematic car I’ve ever had. The list of issues has been absurd for a vehicle in this price range and from a brand that markets itself as a premium luxury manufacturer. The sunroof failed, I’ve had multiple tire blowouts under normal driving conditions, the drive bar/suspension was bent from what should have been…

I am reporting a safety concern with BMW vehicles equipped with the B58 Technical Update (B58TU) engine, primarily in 2019–2021 model years. These vehicles use a variable-displacement oil pump containing an internal thermoplastic adjusting component that regulates oil pressure. This plastic part is prone to fracturing, leading to sudden loss or instability of engine oil pressure. Failures most commonly occur during cold starts in low ambient temperatures. When the component breaks, oil pressure…

Engine oil pump is failing. Early production 2019-2020 model years are made of plastic which can crack and break resulting in engine failure while driving. This is a well documented issue regarding the BMW B58 Engine (2nd Generation) They have since updated the engine oil pump part to a durable metal pump on newer models leaving the older ones with the bad part with no resolution. The vehicle no longer measures the oil level and is a symptom of the pump starting to fail. There is no telling…

Component: Front differential / xDrive drivetrain system. Vehicle is available for inspection upon request. Description: My 2020 BMW M340i xDrive has exhibited a persistent whining noise from the front drivetrain since approximately 38,000 miles. The noise varies with speed and load and appears to originate from the front differential. A BMW dealership inspected the vehicle and acknowledged the noise but declined repair under warranty. This condition is consistent with premature wear of…

Safety Hazard: Oil Pump Failure Leading to Sudden Engine Stall (BMW B58TU engines) Description of Defect: The oil pump module in the 2020 BMW M340i (G20) contains internal plastic components that are prone to thermal degradation and premature failure. These plastic parts can crack or disintegrate, causing a sudden loss of oil pressure. Increasing wear on internal engine components and even leading to irreversible engine damage. Safety Risk: A failure of the oil pump leads to insufficient…

The vehicle displayed a “Passenger Restraint System Malfunction” warning. Upon diagnosis by an authorized BMW dealership (Fields BMW, [XXX] ), the issue was identified as a faulty passenger knee airbag wiring harness (short to ground). The dealer confirmed that this condition is documented in a BMW Technical Service Bulletin [XXX] ), indicating that BMW is aware of a recurring defect involving this component. This failure directly affects the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), which is a…

I’ve been doing research for this particular issue on the 2020 bmw m340i (B58 engine). There is a plastic housing on the oil pump that seems to completely collapse due to consistent heat cycles (starting the vehicle). As far as I know that common symptoms include not being able to read oil levels and this is what commonly shows a faulty or unreliable oil pump that could potential cause a oil leak into engine where it gets hot and cause a fire. This is extremely dangerous and only the vehicles…
